You are buying a house in Southern Illinois. The names look familiar when you look at the map but when people talk, nothing makes sense. If you are asking someone for directions to Vee-enna, in deep Southern Illinois, you might end up in St. Louis at the airport looking at the European ticket counter. You are really looking for veye-ANNA. And God help you if you attempt to say Cape Girardeau in a closed room by yourself, much less a public space where the locals will stop and stare at the "funny" foreigner.

I found this Pronunciation Guide hanging in a local radio station, and it's exactly the thing that people moving to Southern Illinois need to know. It's not comprehensive but study it and in no time, you'll sound like you've lived here all your life! I've also attached an audio file.
